Chaetodipterus faber Atlantic Spadefish Broussonet, 1782
Obtains a maximum size of 91 cm (35.8 in) TL. Usually found in large groups. Distribution: Western Atlantic: Massachusetts, USA and northern Gulf of Mexico to Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Inhabits shallow waters and estuaries at depths of 3 - 35 m (9.8 - 114.8 ft). Needs plenty of unobstructed swimming room. Not known to be aggressive. Can be kept in pairs or groups. Will eat many sessile invertebrates. Omnivore. In the wild, feeds primarily on benthic invertebrates and plankton. In the aquarium, feed 2-3 times a day. Feed a variety of foods, including marine algae and meaty foods that are appropriately sized for the individual. Has spawned and been reared in captivity.
