Obtains a maximum size of 50 cm (19.7 in) TL. Usually found solitary or in small groups. Distribution: Indo-Pacific: Red Sea and East Africa to the Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Recorded off the coast of Florida in the Western Central Atlantic. Inhabits lagoons and seaward reefs at depths of 5 - 30 m (16.4 - 98.4 ft). Needs plenty of unobstructed swimming room. Not known to be aggressive. Will eat many sessile invertebrates. Omnivore. In the wild, feeds primarily on algae, invertebrates and small fishes. In the aquarium, feed 3 times a day. Feed a variety of foods, including marine algae and meaty foods that are appropriately sized for the individual.
