Obtains a maximum size of 60 cm (23.6 in) TL. Usually found in groups.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea and East Africa to Papua New Guinea, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to Australia. Inhabits lagoons and seward reefs at depths of 0 - 20 m (0.0 - 65.6 ft).

Needs plenty of unobstructed swimming room. Juveniles should be kept with other non-aggressive fishes. Not known to be aggressive. Will eat many sessile invertebrates.

Omnivore. In the aquarium, feed 3 times a day. Feed a variety of foods, including marine algae and meaty foods that are appropriately sized for the individual.
