Obtains a maximum size of 22 cm (8.7 in) TL. Nocturnal.

Distribution: Eastern Central Pacific (endemic to Hawaii). Inhabits lagoons and seaward reefs at depths of 3 - 122 m (9.8 - 400.2 ft).

Carnivore. In the wild, feeds primarily on crustaceans. Feed meaty foods that are appropriately sized for the individual. Examples are fresh or frozen shrimp, scallops, clams, squid, and fish. For smaller individuals feed mysid shrimp and brine shrimp.

Spines are venomous.
